My Favorite Things

Disclaimer: this page may have affiliate links. If you click on one and make a purchase, I might earn a tiny commission (at no extra cost to you, of course!). I only recommend products I genuinely love and think you’ll find super helpful—not just for the little bonus I get if you shop.

You don’t need fancy tech or every shiny tool out there to be successful. Promise!

After 8+ years as a creative entrepreneur, I’ve tried lots of tech and tested more materials than I care to admit. Here’s what I’ve learned: you can totally build a wildly successful business with simple tools.

Start with the basics and only add more when you actually need it. The real secret to success isn’t in some magical tool or piece of software—it’s in your brand, how you serve your audience, and how you share your products.

Laser Favorites

Wood & Acrylic

1/8 PREFINISHED MAPLE

Finished maple plywood was my favorite for physical products I shipped to customers. Instead of masking the wood, simply use a damp cloth to wipe away any char from the finished surface. While it’s a bit more expensive, it saves you tons of time by skipping the unmasking step.

1/8 UNFINISHED MAPLE

Unfinished maple plywood is my favorite for testing my SVG designs. It’s affordable, but beautiful. 90% of the time I sand this wood, instead of masking.

1/4 MAPLE PUREBOND

I use maple purebond plywood from Home Depot for my bigger projects. It’s thicker and more affordable than the 1/8 maple mentioned above. 90% of the time I sand this wood, instead of masking.

1/8 CLEAR ACRYLIC

I’ve found that clear acrylic from GS2 Awards has the best price, fastest shipping, and uses the best masking tape. I love this product!

MATTE ACRYLIC – CUSTOM MADE BETTER

I love the look and feel of matte colored acrylic—my go-to finish. I purchase mine exclusively from Custom Made Better. They have the best color selection and Melody (the owner) is the kindest, coolest human.

Tools & supplies

GLOWFORGE PRO

This was my very first laser! I bought it back in 2018, and it’s still going strong. I chose the Pro model for the passthrough slot, even though I didn’t think I’d need it for my smaller projects. Turns out, I use the passthrough about 90% of the time.

AEON MIRA 9

I upgraded my laser in 2023 and love having a bigger, faster laser. And the best part, Aeon’s customer support is top-tier!

ORBITAL SANDER (Amazon)

I prefer to sand my unfinished wood to remove char instead of masking. This sander is comfortable to use and gets the job done fast.

AC INFINITY 6″ INLINE FAN (Amazon)

I added this to my Glowforge to cut down on the smell and noise—it’s a total game-changer! Honestly, I wish I’d gotten it right from the start. If you’re looking to upgrade your hobby laser setup, I can’t recommend this enough.

8 GALLON AIR COMPRESSOR (Amazon)

I bought this as an upgrade for my Mira 9. The extra air from the compressor creates better, cleaner cuts. Love this upgrade!

3M 467MP ADHESIVE

I use this on the back side of my material (mostly acrylic) for attaching 3D details
instead of gluing every piece.

MASKING TAPE (Amazon)

Sometimes I mask my material. When I do, I have found this brand works great! Just be sure to burnish it on good with a scraper.

PLASTIC SCRAPERS (Amazon)

If you’re going to mask, these little guys are great help!

HANDHELD COMPRESSOR (Amazon)

After I sand my unfinished wood, I use this handheld air compressor to blow away the dust left behind on the wood.

PAPER ROLL DISPENSER (Amazon)

I use this to store my masking tape and 3M adhesive rolls. You can attach it to the wall or leave it freestanding—it’s sturdy enough that it won’t slide around too much!

70% ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL WIPES (Amazon)

When I cut acrylic, I remove the top masking first. After cutting, I use these wipes to clean the acrylic if needed. There’s a rumor that isopropyl alcohol is bad for acrylic, but I can confirm it’s perfectly safe (ask Melody)—just avoid using it on clear acrylic! *These work great to clean prefinished plywood too!

Today’s the last day to get the two bonus files with The Reading Nook File Builder Kit. They go away at midnight!

Comment KIT and I’ll send you the details 🩷
We wanted to try something a little different with We wanted to try something a little different with these…

Most book dividers sit off to the side, but we thought it would be fun to have one that’s visible from the front.

The laser version uses a simple slot you adjust for your material and put a tab into on the back.

Or if you have a 3D printer, you can print the front piece and tab and just slide it together, same tab every time and super thin between the books.

Either way, we’re obsessed with how these came out!

This design is included in our File Builder Kit: The Reading Nook. 📚✨ Comment KIT for the details :)
One of the very first things I made for myself at One of the very first things I made for myself at the beginning of the year was this sign to track the books I read (my goal is 30).

I save the book covers on my phone, print them with my HP Sprocket Select, stick them on the shelf, and then fill in my rating with a paint marker underneath.

It’s become such a fun little ritual after finishing a book.

If you want to make one too, this design is included in the Reading Nook File Builder Kit that Alexes @boston.and.birch and I created.

Comment KIT and I’ll send you the details 📚✨
These bookmarks are one of my favorite designs fro These bookmarks are one of my favorite designs from the Reading Nook File Builder Kit Alexes and I made together.

The first version is the engraved laser bookmark, but then we also made a 3D print version, and I love how different they feel even though it’s the same design.

That’s honestly one of my favorite things about this kit.

It’s not just a bunch of finished files. It’s more like a collection of pieces and designs that you can mix, match, and build with when you’re creating products for your shop.

And yes… I may be slightly obsessed with the 3D bookmark version 🤭

✨ If you want to see the full kit Alexes and I put together comment KIT and I’ll send you the details.
Laser business owners… quick question. Do you lov Laser business owners… quick question.

Do you love designing your own products but wish you didn’t have to start from scratch every time?

Because Alexes and I just created something for exactly that.

✨ Introducing ✨
File Builder Kit: The Reading Nook.

This is the very first kit in a brand new product line we’re creating together, and we have MANY more planned.

Think of it like a design toolkit for building product collections.

Inside the kit you’ll find a full system of mix and match elements that all work together so you can design products faster while still keeping full creative control.

Here’s what’s inside:

• single line artwork
• score patterns
• engrave patterns
• base shapes
• ready to use finished files (some designs include 3D print files 😉)
• plus detailed instructions so you know exactly how to use everything

We created this specifically for product based laser businesses who want to launch collections faster without the overwhelm of starting from zero.

To celebrate the launch of our very first File Builder Kit, anyone who purchases between March 10 and March 17 will also get two bonus designs included with their purchase. 🎉

If this sounds like something you’d love to try, comment KIT and we’ll DM you the details.

We’re so excited to finally share this with you and we hope it’s the first of many File Builder Kits to come. 🥹✨
About four years ago we got our first 3D printer, About four years ago we got our first 3D printer, but it was mostly my husband’s thing. He designed little tools to help with my physical products, and I stayed in my laser lane.

3D printing intimidated me. It felt sooo slow compared to my laser, and I could not wrap my brain around waiting hours for something to finish when I was used to cutting things in minutes 😅 I always said I wanted to learn it someday, but I never actually committed to figuring it out.

Then I saw the Snapmaker U1 on Kickstarter back in September and I could not stop thinking about it! The multi-toolhead system, the speed, the reduced waste… it just felt different. It didn’t feel as limiting as the Prusa we had.

So I took the risk and backed it.

It showed up at the beginning of February, and I’ve basically been printing nonstop with it ever since 🤪 I was excited… but this thing completely exceeded my expectations. The risk 100% paid off.

I’ve been learning 3D modeling over the past several months to prepare for this, and actually turning my laser designs into dimensional products has been the coolest experience. Watching something I’ve designed become colored and layered in a whole new way is reigniting my creative soul 😂

I’m so excited to add this tool alongside my laser!! They complement each other so well, and it feels like I just unlocked a whole new level of what’s possible in my business.

I’m really excited to start sharing more of what I’ve been working on behind the scenes. It’s gonna be sooo good!!
