The problem isn’t where we look for ideas, but how we use what we find. It’s way too easy to be influenced by someone else’s style without realizing it. (Ask me how I know. 😬)

That’s why I often use AI as a first step. It helps me explore fresh ideas before diving into reference images. It’s why I believe that, when used thoughtfully, AI can actually help us create more original work.

I used to have similar concerns too until I thought about my own design process and learned how AI works to generate art.

If I study trends, browse Pinterest for inspiration, and learn from other designs and designers, how different is that from what AI does?

It’s not as black and white as it seems.

AI isn’t copying and pasting. It’s recognizing patterns, just like we do, and generating something new based on what it’s learned. The real question here isn’t if AI is bad—it’s how we use it.

AI is a tricky subject. Some people love it, some people hate it, and a lot of people don’t know what to think yet. And I get it. AI is changing fast, and it’s easy to feel like we’re losing control of what creativity even means.

This weekend, someone called me out for using AI in my design process. They said I shouldn’t be in business and that any success wasn’t earned because I haven’t “put in the work”.

If you have concerns about AI, I respect that. I’ve had my own questions too. But I also know that AI isn’t going anywhere, and that ignoring it won’t make it less powerful.

The way we choose to use it is what matters. I use it as a tool that helps me execute the ideas I already have in my head - ideas that are mine. I guide it, I refine it, I shape it into something usable. The final design is still my work.

I don’t believe AI is the enemy. The real challenge is figuring out how to use it in a way that makes sense for us as creatives and business owners.

I’m not here to convince anyone to love AI. But I do hope I can show that it doesn’t have to be a threat to our creativity. There’s a way to use it responsibly and keep our human originality at the forefront.

Would you believe me if I told you AI had a role in the design process for my Valentine’s Day collection (my Easter one too)? 😏

I use AI as a tool to help visualize the designs in my head. Sometimes I have ideas but need a visual reference to refine them. AI-generated art gives me a starting point, but I always transform it into something original and laser-friendly.

Okay, probably not the best thing for me to be doing on top of my Glowforge. You never know what might cause the glass to shatter, but it hardly works anymore and basically gets more use being my worktable these days anyway 🫠

BUT! Let me tell you, this paper roll dispenser is a must if you’re applying masking tape or 3M/Dualtite adhesive regularly like I am. So. Much. Easier! 👏🏻 And don’t forget to burnish really well to get all the bubbles out best you can.
